It's the most wonderful time of the year....

Magic exists. I know I'm not alone when I say that Morel Mushroom season is one of the most spectacular 2-week stretches in the entire year. We all know that Mother's Day was universally agreed to be celebrated in early May to coincide with the honoring of Mother Nature's coming of spring, which is heralded by the showy and arguably lovely tulip perhaps, but not to be outdone by the morel. What are morel mushrooms you may ask? I could give you the sassy answer: pure, delicious magic. Grab a cup of tea, and sit dear friend.
Here's the story: morel mushrooms grow spontaneously, popping out of the ground. You can literally go out an hour later, and see a full-grown mushroom that was decidedly not there before! There's much speculation of where they grow. Typically, you find them near recently deceased elm trees (although many are found elsewhere...) on sunny slopes. Sightings have started as far north as southern Minnesota. It's a week more until I can start a full-fledged hunt. Of course, I've been scouting some locales in Hudson to see if I can identify any 'shrooms in my new territory. My sister in Northern IL has found some already this year, "a small mess of little greys," my gram reported. My mom and Eri are the most successful 'shroom hunters in our bunch, after our beloved grandpa "papa louie", gram's husband. Back in his days, he would bring potato sacks (yes, multiple sacks!) and find so many he'd share with friends and neighbors. After his passing, Eri and Mom took up the family tradition, bringing his bamboo mushrooming cane (great for delicately pushing leaves and branches) and his lucky dungarees. I annually travel back to IL for Mom's Day weekend, to celebrate Mom's Day and hopefully find a little grey or a yellow.
Morels are the manifestation of true miraculousness of spring. Use this idea of sprouting joyously---of organic extension, a principle of anusara yoga, in your life and practice on the mat today. Consider the magic, that lies unexpectedly all around you.
